Nothing to see here

If you go to http://www.sternwheelregatta.com/ you will see nothing but flash and no information. At least that all I can see in Safari. I guess I have to look somewhere else for a schedule for this years Regatta.

Update: Other say they can see it. See the comments for details. It works fine for me in FireFox.
Update 2: Becky, the REGATTA FUNERAL PARADE is Saturday at 5 p.m.

I'm behind on keeping up the WV blogroll. I never really started this to be an index project. I just wanted to make just pointers to other WV bloggers. I will keep adding them to the blogroll. As long as we don't break the Blogline blogrolling tool, we should be fine.

'Ashes to Glory': The real 'We are...Marshall'

For the real story behind We are...Marshall, I recommend the very good documentary Ashes to Glory. It's getting harder to find, but you can still find some copies for sale usually in local bookstores. I've looked but can't find it on sale online anywhere. If some knows where to order it online, please let me know.

Keith-Albee gets a new lease on life...again

The Charleston Gazette has this story, but I couldn't find it in the H-D.

The Keith-Albee Theatre, which as a movie house fell victim to a new multiplex a few blocks away in downtown Huntington, will be reborn as the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center Inc., Huntington attorney David Tyson announced Monday.

In January, the Hyman family gave the theater to the Marshall University Foundation. Now the university foundation has given the theater to the new independent nonprofit. The foundation never saw its role as anything but temporary until civic leaders were ready to take on the project, Tyson said.

It now looks like We Are...Marshall can have a proper premiere in Huntington after all.

Building the Perfect IT Person

eWeek examines the state of IT and looks at what it takes to be the perfect IT person.

Technology certifications matter. Or maybe they don't. Pay is up for IT workers, but many haven't recovered the wages that typified the late '90s. There aren't enough computer science majors in the United States, but the jobs held by the ones we do have here could be outsourced. Corporations want M.B.A. technology managers, but there are shortages of specialized technology skills. Meanwhile, the image of the profession is in the dumps.

Those rip-and-read headlines culled from eweek.com over the last month paint a confusing picture. Pick a survey—for example, an Aug. 2 compensation study released by Foote Partners, an IT research company in New Canaan, Conn. Wait a few days, and there's bound to be another take on the technology work force that will pop up to counter it.

It's homecoming time in Richwood

Tomorrow I will be traveling to Richwood for the annual Cherry River Festival Grand Feature Parade. Of course the Cherry River Navy will be in town for their annual maneuvers. The Cherry River Navy is the only landlocked navy in the world.

I remember large crowds as a child. Now, like everything else in small town West Virginia, it draws a much smaller crowd.

Capitol Street Tibits

* The Steve Payne Photography and Callen McJunkin Gallery at 221 Capitol Street has closed. Sources tell me that Steve has moved into a smaller space here in Charleston.

* This month's Taylor Books newsletter, The Eye, reports The Dresser closed on July 31. Tegan Easterday will be joining the staff of the new Schwabe-May at the new location which was formerly the Steve Panye Gallery.

* Cazon announced new hours last week. They will no longer be open on Saturday. They are open Monday through Friday 10 am - 3 pm.

* Randy Moss plans to open a second smoothie store. The Charleston Urban Renewal Authority board agreed Wednesday to lease the vacant storefront between Capitol City Roasters and First Watch in the city's Summers Street parking garage to a group headed by Moss for an Inta Juice store.

* Banana Joe's is in some hot water with the Alcohol Beverage Control Administration again after a large fight outside the club last weekend.

* Local leaders say Charleston might be stuck with a Capitol Street strip club. New owners, including including a man facing federal tax evasion and fraud charges, took over Capitol City Gold and renamed it Gold Dust last month.

Cazon mimi-review

I've been there for lunch twice in the past couple of weeks. It's very good. The only complaint is they are not yet serving the Texas Spuds. It seems they don't have the equipment to make the Texas Spuds yet. Both times I had the Beef Fajita Burrito. The guacamole and the salsa is fresh (not out of a jar).

The lines have been long at lunch, but it hasn't been too bad this week. I walk by the joint on the way home for lunch.

Kanawha City residents say 'Good fences make good neighbors'

East Kanawha Estates residents says good fences make good neighbors.

The area is receiving a new fence thanks to the City of Charleston. The area was the scene of a shooting last month when a police officer was shot in the mouth, but I fail to see how this fence makes anyone safer, nor why the city should pay for it.
