See "We Are Marshall" on Dec. 6

The following is a press release from the Marshall Alumni Association. I wanted to spread the word in case anyone is interested:

The Greater Kanawha Valley Marshall University Alumni Club has, through the generosity of the law offices of Hunt and Serreno, acquired tickets for a private screening of We Are Marshall.

The screening will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, at Marquee Cinema at the Southridge Shopping Center on Corridor G. Tickets are $50 each with proceeds to benefit the Marshall University Graduate College in South Charleston.

"This is our way of enabling and encouraging Marshall fans in the Kanawha Valley to join together in screening this epic film, while raising funds for the Marshall University Graduate College," said Tony Serreno. "It's a win-win situation for everyone."

To obtain tickets or for more information, call Martha Hill at (304) 744-5149.

The Old Richwood Depot

I couple of people told me about this story in last Monday's Charleston Daily Mail about the old train depot in Richwood, but I didn't go read it until last night. The article includes the story of how two of my classmates painted a mural depicting the once-bustling train depot. The mural was completed in 1982: the year we graduated from high school. It's sort like looking at a yearbook photo. I was shocked to find out one of them had died.

Other than my weird personal reflections on the story, it is a pretty nice look at how Richwood is trying to more ahead when so many smaller towns are dying from stagnation.

I also found out last night the father of my best friend from high school died. Ralph Dunn was a lawyer, a civic leader, and a hell of a nice guy. Ralph used to throw a Cherry River Festival Grand Feature Parade viewing party in his office on Main Street that was not to be missed.

Scoled by Big Daddy Bird

It might look like I'm being scolded by Big Daddy Bird, but I'm just checking out his statue.

Capitol

Yesterday we saw Charleston like tourist. First we went to the Capitol.

It is open to the public most days. There was no one inside the building yesterday.

We also went to the Purple Moon. I'll post about that and more Capitol Photos later.

This documentary is the real story behind the movie with interviews, and rare footage and photographs. I've seen it on PBS a number of times, and this one is going on my Amazon.com wish list.

Trouble in River City

Huntington citizens and the city council clash with mayor over a pink bridge.
Felinton argued it is the council that has cast the city in a negative light.

"If anyone says we're a laughing stock, it's because we're sitting here having an emergency meeting about a pink bridge," he said. "If this was in a less affluent community, I question whether we would even be having this meeting."

Felinton also claimed residents who live near the bridge have over-reacted. He said people have called Sansom's employer to complain.

On Monday, Sansom filed a complaint with the Huntington Police Department after he says a man ordered him to stop painting the bridge. The man returned a few minutes later and threw Sansom's bucket of paint into Fourpole Creek, according to the complaint.

The listed suspect in the complaint is John Brunetti II, a citizen member on The Herald-Dispatch's editorial board. Brunetti has not been charged with any crime, but has received a summons to appear in Cabell County Magistrate Court on Nov. 30, according to the Magistrate Clerk's office.

Brunetti declined to comment on the matter Thursday.

Vote Early

Today is the last day of early voting in West Virginia. In Kanawha County, you'll need to head down to the Voters Registration Office located on a corner of Court and Quarrier streets between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I plan on voting early today to save my morning time to go to the CAB meeting.

Also don't forget the West Virginia Bloggers Message Board meet-up is today at 2 p.m. at Capitol Roasters.
