New signs will not make downtown parks more inviting

If you really want to make Davis Park and Slack Plaza more inviting, the first step would be to get rid of the crack dealers, drunks, people playing dice, and panhandlers. A few new signs are not going to make a difference.

After reading this story in the Gazette about how a group has been formed to seek ways to improve downtown parks, I was amazed at their inability or denial of the real problems facing the city's two downtown parks.
The idea was to find a way to replace the multitude of signs at Slack Plaza and Davis Park with a few discreet and gently worded ones. But after touring the parks Tuesday evening, about a dozen people in a group called Charleston C2 (Charleston Creative Class) found far more ways to improve the parks.

“It’s all so negative,” photographer Steve Payne said, referring to signs at the entrance to Davis Park that say “DO NOT FEED THE PIGEONS” and “NO SKATEBOARDING ALLOWED IN PARK.”

Maybe new signs that say, "Please don't sell crack" or Please don't ask strangers for money" would be better.
Both groups talked about ways to make Slack Plaza more inviting to everyone. Ideas included street musicians, banners and art to mark the walkway from Capitol Street to the mall, vendors, and landscaping improvements.

None of these steps help with the real problems facing downtown parks.

Lessig on Network Neutrality

For those of you not familiar with this issue, the telcos want to begin charging access fees to large companies like Google, Yahoo, and Ebay. The result with be a metered internet, and an end of the internet as we know it.

Professor Lawrence Lessig has a post today on what you can do to help save the internet from telco and other internet providers who smell a new revenue stream.

Wikipedia entries for local people

A friend sent me this Wikipedia entry for Jule Huffman, otherwise known to local folks as Mr. Cartoon. I notice there is an entire category for people from Huntington, including Soupy Sales, and my former professor, Dr. Simon D. Perry.

Scarlet Tanager

I've added another WV bloger Scarlet Tanager to the blogroll. She was nice enough to link to that strange recipe for Peeps pie that I posted around Easter.

Sorry for the long silence

My iBook died. It's logic board is no longer logical. This is the second iBook I have owned that has suffered this fate. The first one was replaced for free by Apple under extended warranty programs. In fact, it was replaced three times. My girlfriend has that iBook now.

My iBook G4 was a little over a year old when it went belly up in a ditch. In other words, it was a little over a year over warranty. So with the help of my parents (thanks mom and dad), I'm the owner of a slightly used PowerBook G4.

It's a great machine. It's a little bigger than I'm used to, but I'm getting by.

The Death and Life of Great American Writer

Jason Kottke reports Jane Jacobs died last week. Jacobs wrote The Death and Life of Great American Cities, one of the few book I actually bothered to read as an undergraduate. Her ideas about what cities should be, continues to influence my thinking to this day. I wonder where my copy is?
