The state of broadband in West Virginia

Broadband internet connections have been around for a while. Cable TV operators have been offering fast connections since the late 1990s. When you say cable TV operators here in West Virginia, you mean Charter.

Charter first offered broadband in Huntington in 1998 or 1999 as I recall. Broadband followed me to Charleston in 2000. I got a broadband connection for the first time in 2000. At first I was a beta tester. It didn't work well at all at first. Now I'm not sure how I ever lived with without it.

The Charleston Gazette reports today that broadband availability up 40 percent in West Virginia in 2005 but the state still behind rest of nation. Even small towns like my home town of Richwood now has DSL access, but gaps remains.

Electric Wind

Looks like the citizens of northern Greenbrier County aren't the only ones worried about proposed wind projects to produce electricity. Beech Ridge Energy has proposed to build 40-story turbines across Cold Knob, a tall, over 4,0000 ft. summit.

The Boston Globe reports Senator Kennedy is fighting a similar project on Cape Cod. The Cape isn't as tall, but just as windy.

Don Surber says Let Them Sit In The Dark And Freeze To Death and for once I agree with him.

WB gets petty about "We are...Marshall" pictures

Last Friday and Saturday Rick Lee posted pictures from the last day of production of the "We are...Marshall" movie in Huntington. This morning I ran into Rick in Taylor Books, and he told me that Warner Brothers has requested he take them down.
Warner Brothers has requested that I take down the production stills from "We Are Marshall". For reasons I won't go into here, I have decided to comply with this request for the time being. I'm sorry if you didn't get to see them. Perhaps I can have some of the back up at a later time.

I find this outrageous. Why goes the Huntington Herald-Dispatch and other publications a pass to run basically the same photos?

This is poor public relations. Looks like I need to send Ernie Malik, publicist for the "We Are Marshall" movie, a copy of the Cluetrain Manifesto. At the very least he should be reading Doc Searls. Markets are conversations Ernie.

Thanks to the magic of Google cache, Rick's removed posts including pictures can be found here. Scroll down to see the pictures.

A Spy in the House of Thunder

Don Surber has dubbed it the The Nathan Hale Mary Pass. WVU denies spying on the Herd.

We can thank the Charleston Daily Mail for breaking the story of a WVU student in the stands taking notes on the Herd's practice. Now I bleed green and white, but looking at how the two teams match up this year, I don't think the WVU football program has much to worry about. But there was the basketball upset, so I guess they might.

Hot Dogs and Slaw

WV Hot Dog Blog examines the Slaw Belt Theory and makes a visit to Gold Dome Bar & Grill. I've always wanted to try the Gold Dome. I've heard good things about it over the years. The truth is I'm craving Stewarts most of the time. I haven't had a Stewarts hot dog since last fall. Might be time for a trip to Huntington.

You can blame Bob Coffield for the doggers tag.

H-D blogs

The Huntington Hearld-Dispatch has blogs. I stumbled across them while reading the latest Marshall Movie news. There is a Marshall Movie blog.

Like the GAZZ blogs they are powered by Blogger. I haven't gone digging for the RSS feeds, but I will report back after I do. They should really publish them somewhere.

Sept. 25, 1971 - Xavier 13, Marshall 15

There is much buzz but little real coverage of the filming of "We Are Marshall" movie. One of this things that throws up a red flag to me is the announcement of the use of at least two composite characters. I really hope they don't take too much artistic license with this true story.

Wabi-Sabi reports the city of Huntington has officially gone Hollywood.

And don't forget to check out whereinhuntingtonismatthewmcconaughey.com.

There is no time to blog during the week anymore. It's just too busy.

I'm sick of April Fool jokes already. None of them are really that funny, but geeks love them for some reason. I did make an April Fools post last year, but this year I'm passing.
