What's the future of Slack Plaza?

Nanya Friend, editor and publisher of the Charleston Daily Mail asks, Well, where should Slack Plaza go?
Workers, shoppers and others are using the plaza for what it was originally intended, to walk from the older area of downtown to the mall.

Bus riders, too, are doing what they are supposed to do.

But whoever planned the space obviously wanted it to be more than that.

If it isn’t working out — and it’s had a long trial — perhaps the plaza should simply be reduced in size and the space put to some other use.

Slack Plaza Update

Turns out the trees in Slack Plaza were removed because they had, "became a problem and were losing limbs."

"They reached the end of their useful life,” Mary Jane Vanderwilt, chairwoman of the Municipal Beautification Commission tell the Charleston Gazette.
About a dozen Bradford pears at Slack Plaza have been cut down, chopped up and shredded this week. The city plans to plant new trees there, but possibly not until the park is redesigned at Mayor Danny Jones’ request to eliminate friction between people who walk through and those who sit in the park.

Problems in Slack Plaza are not new

Yesterday the Charleston Daily Mail ran a story quoting Mayor Danny Jones says Spikes might not be enough for downtown park. As this 1984 article in the New York Times shows, problems in Slack Plaza are not a new thing. At that time Mayor Mike Roark installed cameras to help deter vandalism and insure public safety along Slack Plaza and Brawley Walkway (AKA Fife Street).

Yesterday afternoon the city began to take down trees in the park, but it is unclear what the plan is for the space.

Check out the new the Appalachian Knitter's Guild blog

Check out the new the Appalachian Knitter's Guild blog. It just launched today. It's called Charleston Knitters, but it was started by Appalachian Knitter's Guild president Blair to document the groups knitting projects and to share ideas.

In the interest of full full disclosure I should let you all know that Blair is my fiance. She is also a very talented knitter.
