Origin of the 'We Are...Marshall' Cheer

I've been attending Marshall football games since 1982, and I didn't remember the 'We Are...Marshall' cheer being used before 1988. This story confirms what I remember: the cheer wasn't used until October 8, 1988 when Marshall was playing Furman during homecoming.

I remember sitting across the street in Prindle Field, in the tailgating area when I first heard the cheer. (I usually skipped out of the game to drink beer back in the 80s.)

Wait, are you saying that Hollywood fudged the past a bit to tell a story? How dare you insult our nation's most beloved and respected industry.
